General Freight
Less than Trailer Load (LTL)
LTL customers require transportation of all general merchandise. However, LTL customers do not require exclusive use of a full trailer or a full trailer’s use would not make economic or logistical sense. In essence, LTL customers pool their freight, in a trailer, with other shippers to gain cost or service benefits. LTL pick-ups, generally handled by hand, are made throughout the day, and are loaded into smaller, power tailgate equipped five & ten ton trucks and transported to a warehouse. Freight is then sorted by destination, consolidated into an appropriately destined semi-trailer, and transported to the destination market in the same manner as a TL load. At the destination collection & distribution terminal, freight is unloaded from the semi-trailer, sorted, and delivered by truck to final destination.
Trailer Loads (TL)
TL services are primarily utilized by industrial and commercial customers. The TL concept is based on the customer having sufficient product and/or equipment to require exclusive use of an entire semi-trailer. The customer loads the trailer at origin, after which City Transfer secures the load and transports it to destination. If the destination market is located across a body of water, the trailer is first transported, by truck, to the marine terminal where it is loaded on a barge. The barge is then towed by tugboat to the destination marine terminal. Once at the destination marine terminal, the trailer is unloaded from the barge and delivered to final destination by semi-truck.
Marine Transportation
Marine Transportation customers are those companies having their own semi-trailers and/or equipment. Marine Customers deliver directly to our marine terminal and are loaded directly, by City Transfer, onto a barge for transport to a water-locked destination. After the barge arrives and is unloaded, at the destination marine terminal, the marine customer picks up their trailer or equipment. At times, a marine customer may deliver the trailer to our marine terminal, to have our company provide both the remaining marine and land transportation legs to final destination. We then return the trailer to the original departure marine terminal for the customer.
